Welfare Home For Children

Mrs. Achla Khanna always loved being around children. She never thought that her simple belief that every child deserves happiness and the security of a family will lead her on a path that will eventually change the life of thousands of children. “Maami” to over 2000 children who have known her as their first benefactor, she holds this loving title in far greater worth than her Founder Member & Hon’ble General Secretary of Welfare Home for Children. She along with her husband Mr. Mohinder Singh started WHC with a simple mission ‘every child deserves a home’ and in over four decades now has been able to successfully place children in loving families in India and abroad. She laughingly quotes “hum toh nikle the safar pe akele, log judte gaye, karawaan badhta gaya” (I set out on a journey alone, I was joined by many, and it grew as a caravan).

It was in the year 1979 that Mrs. Achla Khanna conceived an idea to start an orphanage because of her regular visits to orphanage which was quite close to her home during her graduation. The plight of young children without a loving family moved her and she started contemplating opening her own orphanage. With the help of her husband Mr. Mohinder Singh who was a lawyer, in a very short time a society was formed and registered with Govt. of NCT of Delhi. In August 1979, they started Children’s Home with only two children in a rented accommodation. From the beginning they had to face many hurdles and challenges but faced each one of them with determination and a smiling face.

Whenever children came to WHC they were either suffering from ailments or were malnourished for which they had to be hospitalized from time to time. Whenever blood was required for these children, it was given by Mr. Mohinder Singh as the Blood Bank was not willing to give blood, unless same units of blood were given to them in exchange.

In the year 1998, a plot of land was allotted to WHC in Sarita Vihar, New Delhi by Delhi Development Authority. A basement plus 4 floors building was constructed with help and donation from many friends and well-wishers. In the year 2000, WHC finally shifted to a well-designed Children’s Home.

Now WHC is the best orphanage/adoption centre in not only in Delhi but in the whole country.
